My Car: 2007 Audi TT 2.0 Turbo Convertible

Having a race car is a dream for many, but what about a race car that you can drive to and from the track? To find out more, we spoke to Tom Guest - owner of a 2007 Audi TT 2.0 Turbo convertible - to find out more about his car and why he's such a fan.
What car is it?
It's a 2007 Audi TT 2.0 Turbo, which I've had for a year and a half.

Why that car?
I was looking for an all-rounder that would open as many doors as possible, but within a budget that I was comfortable risking on track. I got a fun roadster that would be great on a road trip or weekend drive with the roof down, but with enough power to push myself on a circuit too.
What have you done to it?
I've mainly looked at things that will make the car better for performance driving or improve the aesthetics. For track use, I upgraded the brakes, got a custom exhaust, and got a Stage 1 remap to extract a bit more power out of the engine and make it slightly more fun to drive (it's sitting somewhere around 220bhp).
For the looks side, I got a front splitter and rear wing extender from Maxton Design as they're close to me and reasonably-priced. I also bought a different rear license plate and had the rims sprayed bronze as I love that colour scheme, and I always get a sticker for every track I've driven on.
The main expense though is keeping it happy so I've got the confidence to rev it high, drive it fast, and stomp on the brakes.
In terms of the next upgrades, the main thing I want are tyres as they're definitely limiting me on track, and I'd also love to get some coilovers to limit the lean through faster corners.

What makes your car unique?
You don't see many TTs being used on track, even though they're great sports cars and based on the same platform as a Golf GTI. Track days are usually dominated by MX5s/Miatas, so it's satisfying to prove that you can have fun in something less obvious.
I'd also say a lot of the modifications I've made have helped to make it unique. I doubt you'd find another one exactly the same - especially considering the sticker next to my rear license plate has my dog on it!

What have you done with your car?
I've actually done quite a lot in it - starting with the Javelin Trackdays Sprint Series (JTSS). I did two rounds in 2025 - one at Croft and another at Oulton Park - and it's a great place to start. It's a series that allows you to focus 100% on you, your car, and the circuit - so you can try to get everything out of each of those by the end of the day. It's also a more cost-effective way to learn and enjoy the tracks you see on TV. (More can be found about the Javelin Trackdays Sprint Series here.
Outside of that I've done track days at Teesside Autodrome and Cadwell Park, and took part in the Two Ball Rally where we did the NC500. That saw my wife and me drive 1,400 miles total - up to the north of Scotland and back - alongside some other enthusiasts. The car didn't miss a beat and only made me enjoy it more, even if the MPG didn't really go below 30mpg!
Why do you like your car?
I can drive it to a track with a boot full of spare fluids and tools, have the most fun possible, and then drive it home in comfort. I don't need a trailer and a tow car as it's got number plates and an MOT, so that saves a lot of money. It also makes me that tiny bit more careful on track, knowing that it's got to get me home.
I also love that it's opened up a new avenue for socialising. Since buying it I've become a member of the TT and Friends group, going to meetings and sharing the passion for the car, and also started going to other car meets much more regularly. It's a great way to
I don't expect my car to excite anyone, but the principle of buying something cheap and fun, thrashing it around without being worried, and then driving home with a race number on should show that there are cheap ways to enjoy more motorsport for everyone.
