Custom-Painted BMW E92 320D - My Car...

You won’t see another car that looks like this BMW E92 320D. That’s because it’s the hand-painted creation of Damian Lister, of DKL Custom Refinishes.

The Wakefield-based car painter has done it all himself using a mini spray gun, marker pens, and an airbrush.

“So far I’ve put 80 hours into it,” Damian told us. “Under the bonnet needs finishing, inside door shuts, a few bits to finish. There’ll probably be 150 hours in it by the time it’s done.”

To say that he estimates it’s only half-done, there’s a lot of work that’s been put into it. Design choices are visible from every angle, with more jumping out the more you look.

The wheels have an almost 2D effect to them, emulating the comic book look, while the headlights have arrows and edges highlighting the interior elements. The iconic BMW M tricolor stripe has been painted on the rear third, while flames emanate from the twin double exhausts. The bonnet sports a devil’s head above the BMW badge, while at the base of the spoiler there’s an evil-looking rabbit head.

With so many different parts to this car, where did the inspiration come from?

“I’m an artist, I spray cars for a living, and I’ve always wanted to do [this type of design] to a car - put art on my car,” said Damian. “Watching TikTok gave me the inspiration, but I wanted it different. And I’ve certainly made it different.

“I’ve nicked a few of their ideas and inspirations and tried to add a few myself, and tried to keep it to my theme rather than someone else’s. How the next one will come out we’re not sure, but there will be a next.”

For someone who sprays cars for a living, there’s surely no better way to advertise his business than this car. So, has it helped?

“It’s a good advert for the business, and it’s bringing in quite a bit of work as well.

“We’ll see what we come up with, as I design them myself as well. Everything is done in-house. I can sit down, design the car, and then spray it for them as well.”

It’s not surprising that this car has increased business - how could you not pay attention to it? The car demands attention, as its uniqueness is its calling card. And while you might see other E92s around, you certainly won't miss this one.
